View Full Version : Is this guy an idiot?

You guys probably thought I was talking about something else ...
Nope. I don't get my hard copy of the Illustrated in Minot until the middle of the month. Just saw the "State of Hockey" story on the website. The author of the story begins:
Quick, name the most successful athletic program affiliated with North Dakota State University in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Football? Nope, but that’s close. Women’s basketball? Amy Ruley couldn’t even string together as many consecutive titles as these guys did. In fact, the North Dakota State University Men’s Club Hockey team won more titles in a 10-year stretch than any program at NDSU.
My question: is this guy an idiot? Maybe I shouldn't be asking this about a fellow Illustrated writer -- but to make such a comparison and even imply that the club hockey team, with all due respect, was the most successful athletic program at the school during that time period is insulting. It's a bad comparison. Again, with all due respect, those hockey teams don't belong in the same sentence with the Morton/Hager football teams or Ruley basketball teams.
Thoughts?

Yep, probably shouldn't be asking questions about a fellow BI writer (its not me, btw)....
With that, my guess is he was looking for angle to the story and ran with it.

It was an entertaining article that brought a lot of unknown facts to the surface. I saw nothing the matter with it.
What I do find strange is you calling a fellow writer for BI an idiot. Me thinks you are being a tad anal.

Actually comparing "Club" hockey to National title winning programs in major sports is the mark of a fool. Yep, I'd have to go with idiot.
I've defended Division 1 hockey against the people who bring up the 59 program argument because being good and winning against the resources that some of those schools bring to the table is quite an accomplishment.
But, "club" hockey? Please.
I was going to school at NDSU during part of that time and the exploits of the Club hockey team were not on the radar of the students. Period.

Meh. Don't know if this falls into "idiot" category, but it is somewhat questionable judgement to compare one to the other. That said, congratulations to the NDSU Club Hockey program.
Naw... but why not compare apples to apples? I mean, UND has a hockey program... (ducks and covers)
Of course, what he is saying is a serious slight to NDSU's steel bridge building team. :)

I really dont think he was compairing the importance of hockey against the FB programs. I took it as WHILE all the other programs were doing great and winning conference and national champions that there was something else going on at NDSU that people missed and didnt know about.

You're probably right but it reads like a direct comparison. There are much better ways to write the story. What you posted here is 100% better than what he wrote.
I see the original story as a lame attempt to get as little shock value to spice up the story and it ends up undermining the good part of the story. Why distract the reader? It's a good story so tell it straight.

I didn't think the article was that bad. I read it as more of a program history piece. True, maybe the author could have made his attention getter less "comparison-like", but I don't think that sentence alone makes the writer an idiot.
That tape-job on the other hand... :smh: ;)

The article was obviously written by a hockey fan. Since all hockey fans are douche-bags, I don't see what everybody is all concerned about.

It's OK, Bisonville. He might have Tourette's Syndrome. We're looking into it.

NDB2: Fine. Would you like to go out on a date with me?

two things come to mind.
1. In the end, club hockey or not, there are banners that say NDSU national champions hanging over at the Coliseum (partied under those at Jets games many a drunken night).
2. Dont forget about this ranger.

While we are on the subject of idiots and the current Bison Illustrated, whoever the hell decided to run the story about our interim president with the quote "He (UND President Rober Kelley) has some things he has to deal with, and I think once those things are dealt with we'll be looking to bring the game back" as the main quote on the picture is an idiot.
"Although his stay in the president's chair could be brief he could cement his place in North Dakota athletic lore as being the NDSU president that pushed for the treaty that brought back the greatest game to ever be played in North Dakota"
WTF!!! As if that is the biggest problem facing our interim (douche bag) president. This guy is an embarrassment and couldn't possibly be less progressive and backwards looking if his head was screwed on the other way.
